SOCIETY OF SAN DIEGO
JUNE 2009 MEETING
CSNA 1268 - NASC 3026 ANAC 71399
Year XLVII No. 6
Fourth Wednesday, June 24, 2009
North Park Recreation Center, 2719 Howard St., San Diego

Topic This Month:
Pacific and Indian Ocean Regions
Geographically, this must be one of the largest topics we have undertaken. The Pacific and Indian Oceans alone cover 44% of the earth’s surface. Ken Aring is planning to provide us with a presentation entitled The Pacific and Indian Ocean Region. You’re encouraged to bring any material to show. We’ll have a raffle. Invite a friend.
JUNE QUIZ by Bob Fritsch
The Pacific and Indian Oceans cover a lot of territory, but not a lot of countries if you discount the continents. So we will concentrate on the island nations that issue coins. Below is a list of some NCLT issues from said entities and your challenge is to identify the issuer. Data is from the 20th and 21st Century SCWCs. Some themes may be duplicated by nations other than in the answer list that I may have missed. Have fun with this one – I did writing it.
1. F.A.O. (“More Food for Mankind”), Olympics, Skylab
2. Endangered Wildlife, Save the Children, 1/3 of a coin (see #7, 8)
3. Marine Life Protection, 185th Member of UN, International Coins
4. Half a coin (see #7), Endangered Wildlife, 5th Anniv of Independence
5. WWII Battles, Ship of Death, Modern Jet Aircraft
6. Olympics, America’s Cup
7. Conservation, Charles-Diana Wedding
8. Other half of #4, Olympics, 1/3 of a coin (see #2, 8)
9. Endangered Wildlife, Zodiac Gemstones, 1/3 of a coin (see #2, 7)

The 2009 San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Race Track Fairgrounds is coming up, and our local numismatics clubs need you to help promote our hobby! You’ll also help your club earn a share of the profit from Coinarama. The Fair will run every day from Fri. 6/12 through Sun. 7/5, except Mon. 6/15 and Mon. 6/22. Please “man” the Numismatics department information table at least once, for a 3-1/2 or 4-hour shift. You’ll greet the public, give away foreign coins to kids, plus offer information about our club meetings and Coinarama. If you haven’t done this before, we’ll pair you with another club member who has. You’ll receive free tickets to the Fair. A limited number of free parking passes will also be available. Another way to participate and earn your club “points” is to bring an exhibit of your collection that thousands of Fair attendees will get to admire. The deadline to apply to exhibit is May 6.
To sign up to sit at the Numismatics table at the Fair, or for more information about exhibiting, please call Ken Spindler at (619) 543-0751, or e-mail him at Kjspindler@hotmail.com or Kjspindler@cox.net.
