Topic This Month:
India and South Asia
India and this region of the world have a rich history of local coinage influenced by trade with Greeks, Turks and Romans. Later influences came from the Portuguese, Dutch and British. The region stabilized with India’s independence in 1948. South Asia is defined by the United Nations (UN Subregion of Asia) as comprised of the modern states of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Iran and the Maldives. South Asia is home to well over one fifth of the world's population, making it the most populous and most densely populated geographical region in the world. The Coin Atlas (1990) describes India as having “an independent coinage tradition which adopted and adapted many features from both the European and Islamic traditions, but has always retained a separate identity.” This month’s topic is broad and leaves plenty of room for everyone to bring in something. Mike Shaw is planning to provide us with a talk on Indian Medals. What material from this area of numismatics can you share? You’re encouraged to bring any material to show. We’ll have a raffle. Invite a friend.

1. What name is shared by the last four rulers of Bhutan?
2. Who was the last British monarch to be featured on the coins of Ceylon?
3. How many mintmarks have been used on Republic of India coins?

you convert that era to AD dating?
